Ubuntu 16.04 freezes when using Rstudio (load glyph failed)

Hi there,

I am using Rstudio (Version 0.99.903) which freezes causing the whole system to freeze ( I am using Ubuntu 16.04); when I start Rstudio after a couple of minutes the whole system freezes.

To try to understand the problem I run this code on the terminal:

gdb
file rstudio
run

I got this result:

Starting program: /usr/bin/rstudio
[Thread debugging using libthread_db enabled]
Using host libthread_db library "/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libthread_db.so.1".

load glyph failed err=6 face=0xf50a80, glyph=2797
[Thread 0x7fffd8af6700 (LWP 2562) exited]

So what does it mean the "load glyph"? What should I do to fix this problem?

If I just type :

rstudio

in the terminal I get this:

load glyph failed err=6 face=0x199d790, glyph=2797
load glyph failed err=6 face=0x199d790, glyph=2797

Anyone can help? I really appreciate

Hi Abdellah,

Those glyph load failures are likely a red herring, and not responsible for the failure to launch you're seeing.

I'm not sure what could be causing your system to freeze, except perhaps RStudio attempting to load a very large saved R environment that is exhausting RAM on your machine. What is the output of

locate /.RData

on your machine? Do you have a saved workspace located at ~/.RData?

More details would be helpful -- is RStudio freezing after you attempt some action in the IDE, or just after startup without any other user action?

Best,
Kevin

Thanks Kevin for your prompt reply.

1- Well if I type

locate /.RData

I get:

/home/abdou/Desktop/R/Kaggle/Titanic/.RData

2- Yes I do have a saved workspace located at ~/.RData

3- Rstudio freezes in both cases I mean : sometimes I just start it and do something else and suddenly everything freezes. The only solution I have is to push the power button.

The reason is not user action because as i said it freezes when I start it after a couple of minutes.

Hi Abedellah,

If you move the global workspace out of the way before starting RStudio, does that help?

mv ~/.RData ~/.RData.backup

You might also try doing this with the RStudio Desktop session state folder:

mv ~/.rstudio-desktop ~/.rstudio-desktop-backup

Sorry if I'm misunderstanding -- are you able to do anything within the IDE after it's started up, or is it effectively frozen right from the start? If you monitor RAM usage by RStudio / the underlying rsession process, do you see it increasing in memory usage? You should be able to monitor its memory usage with one of the following:

top -o VIRT
top -o mem

Best,
Kevin

Hi Kevin,

Well to answer your last question first: When I start Rstudio it works very well I can perform any action on it without any problems; I mean I can work with it before it freezes.

I proceeded the way you told me by first moving the global workspace by entring

mv ~/.RData ~/.RData.backup

It worked for more than 7 hours without causing the freeze of the system. Then it freezes again.

I tried the second command:

mv ~/.rstudio-desktop ~/.rstudio-desktop-backup

It worked also for a couple of hours then it freezes the whole system

Now I don't know what I should do?
