Environment pane cutting off variable names

In the old version of RStudio, I was able to see full variable names in the environment pane even when the names were quite long, as I often need variable names with 15-20 characters in them. However, in the new version of RStudio, in order to see full variable names I need to widen the environment pane until it takes up more than half of the screen. I generally try to maximize the size of the editor and console on the screen, and I like to keep the environment pane narrow. I mostly use the environment pane to check which variables are present in the environment - viewing the range of values is less important to me.

Is there any way to adjust (widen) the column width of the variable names in the Values column of the global environment? In other programs, it's possible to click and drag to adjust column width - is something like this possible in the RStudio IDE?

Hi Rhiannon,

Unfortunately this is currently not possible but its something we're looking into implementing going forward. In the meantime, hovering over the variable names in the Environment pane should bring up a tooltip that states the full name of the variable - hopefully that will be helpful to you for this purpose.

Thanks,
Ian

Please, all for this. I really feel this was a regression in the usability of RStudio.

It's been nearly two years sine this post; is there any news about implementing this feature? It would be most appreciated.

I would add my support to the desire to have the possibility to make the columns in the environment pane wider

Hi everyone,

Thanks for bumping the issue -- I've bumped the issue in the RStudio issue queue and we'll see if we can devote some resources to this soon.

Best,
Kevin

Would it be possible to just point me to the code file and line where I can just hard set in a width value? I promise I won't open my window part way or attempt to open onto a large selection monitor widths; I am comfortable dealing with the column being non ratio adjusted for window size. This is far more preferable to me than having to play the mouseover shell game to figure out which of my dozens of summary dataframes is which.

Adding another name to this. It's been ten months since the last update. It seems like pretty basic functionality.

I would also really like this feature, is there any possibility of it happening?
