Multiple instances of RStudio Server for the same user

Hi,

I was wondering if you ever plan to have support for a single user logging into RStudio Server in multiple windows of the same browser (analogous to opening multiple instances of the RStudio Desktop application)? This would be really convenient, especially when you're working on a couple of big projects at once--it would mean you don't have to reload the workspace each time you want to switch from one project to the other. If system resources are a concern, there could be an administrator's option to set a 2 or 3 session-per-user limit.

Thanks!

Hello,

Thanks for the feedback and this is something we hope to do eventually. We've got this on our feature suggestion list and I'll chalk up another request. We'll see what we can do further down the road.

I'll bump this as well. I've got a large cluster so I can run many things in parallel. The server has no GUI though, and launching complex jobs from the command line isn't really the best solution, especially for getting results out, interacting etc.

A single user logging into RStudio Server in multiple windows of the same browser (analogous to opening multiple instances of the RStudio Desktop application) is the single biggest RStudio feature that our group has been pining for since we started using RStuiod Server. I can see that it's a feature many people seem to be interested in, so I thought I'd give this thread another bump.

Thanks and we appreciate the feedback. This indeed has become a very highly requested feature. Our main resistance for not doing it sooner was that it could easily allow one user to hog all the resources of an entire server. We first plan to put in more management tools for server admins which can help prevent this and then we also plan to put in this feature.

I agree that this would be really useful. Currently I launch different browser just to work around this.
